The Future of Chaos

We provide a full service blog here at 40k Daemons. We deal with gaming tactics, modeling, pop culture, sports, matters of the heart…

Today we talk about the future and whether one should be looking forward to it or no as a Chaos player. First, I must caveat by saying I have no actual information about any changes forthcoming to either Chaos book, or when they might appear. Even though it turned out to be true that you could take Ragnar Blackmane for free if your entire army is in drop pods, not all of us are privileged to have such well-informed little birds as may other sites. Nay, what follows is speculation based on what we’ve seen from the 7e releases so far.

First, I would remark that the recent releases have not been bland or “blah”. Orks got two wacky ass walkers and some cool guns. Space Wolves got a floating bobsled that would get immobilized the instant somebody shot either wolf pulling the stupid thing, and also two versions of a flying shoe with itty bitty wings that is as airworthy as a nuclear sub. Grey Knights got nothing new, and to that extent is fairly dull despite the fact that they didn’t actually lose access to anything anybody ever took. It’s just that bullshit three man Henchmen units can’t fill out your troops quota as before. Everybody just mad because the new books aren’t army strong like Eldar.

On the spectrum of army silliness, Chaos falls closer to Orks and Space Wolves, which are very silly indeed, as opposed to Grey Knights, which are not-at-all silly. With two fully-supported ranges, it is hard to imagine either Chaos book getting re-released without some new models, even if those models are just new plastic GD’s. I would hope CSM get more daemon engines. Kranon the Relentless might get his own entry since he has a model. Daemons will only get ever get things that also make sense in the Fantasy game, so I wouldn’t hold out hope for more Soul Grinder-esque models, because although it is Fantasy legal, it doesn’t belong there. I’d be happy if they made the vehicles we do have worth taking. I’d be more inclined to suspect plastic kits for Flesh Hounds, Beasts and Fiends before new models. But that’s all speculation.

First the stuff we know is going to happen. Abaddon is going to be the CSM character Lord of War (Lord of Skulls will be in there too.). My guess is Be’lakor will be the Daemon Lord of War. Abaddon won’t change much at all, while Be’lakor might. You will probably not be able to take cult units as troops. I hope they implement Legion rules that would allow this, but we haven’t seen any indication of this. Objective Secured is not handed out willy-nilly.

Assuming this is the case, I would need a huge revaluation of the cult units to even consider using them. Ten Noise Marines with two blastmasters cost too much even as my mandatory troops. Fortunately, GW seems to be valuing things down, so I wouldn’t be surprised to pay less for any of the cult units. I think regular CSM’s are staying at 13 though since Blood Claws are 12. They might get dropped one point. Unless the CSM sprues get a rework, the unit options are not likely to change much if at all. So two specials or one special/one heavy at ten models and a max unit of 20 models.

Cultists, too won’t see any new options unless they redo the sprue. This may be one unit they do rework since they only sell the five man packages. Otherwise, they seem appropriately-priced, though the Champ costs five points more than he should.

Those are going to be your two options, and you’ll have to bring two in a CAD, which sucks. Hope I’m wrong, or I hope they make either option worth taking. Other than that, you would expect a revaluation of all the units, mostly to the downside, which, on the whole will be good for the army. Likely it won’t be in the league of Eldar or Space Marines, but one would assume that those books will be brought into line in the fullness of time, so no more Bikers as troops, and Eldar going back to what they’re supposed to be, which is an army full of specialists to be applied tactically.

Daemons, too will see their troop selections unchanged, though who knows if they’ll adjust their prices? Horrors might go up. Regardless, you know Bloodcrushers will get better and/or cheaper to be more in line with Thunderwolves. I bet Flamers and Fiends will be improved, Screamers will get a stronger bite attack, and all of the chariots need some serious help. Frankly, I expect it to be almost as different as the current book is from the last one. Certainly the MC’s will get a price reduction as they cost too much now.

The reason Daemons have random weapon rewards is because many of the models have no options for you to take. The CSM Terminator Lord/Sorcerer kit comes with a staff, a power axe, a power fist, a chain fist and combi-weapons. It is a plastic kit. You can’t give your Bloodthirster a sword because the model only comes with an axe, unlike the Wraithknight with its many options. Khorne Heralds only have Hellblades. Slaanesh Heralds only have claws. The reward table was created as a solution to this problem, as there is no standardization between the various alignments as there is with other armies. Unless the sprues get a rework, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the random table stick around, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they came up with another solution to the problem as well.

To me, all of this means that both Daemons and CSM’s will get better with an update since the options will get cheaper, but CSM’s will be a bit more restrictive as with Space Wolves, forcing you to take things you may not want. And of course there will be formations that might be neato, but one can only guess at those things.
